Starring Jack Thompson, Bryan Brown, Edward Woodward and John Waters, this classic film is being screened as a fundraiser for ‘Tyalgum Diggers’ to assist it to put on a special demonstration by the Australian Light Horse at its Family Day on August 17 at the Tyalgum Showground.
Directed by Bruce Beresford in 1980, who went on to make ‘Driving Miss Daisy’ amongst many greats, this film is based on a novel by Kid Denton (Andrew Denton’s dad), about Australian horse master and drover Harry ‘Breaker’ Morant, who had been drafted by the British to help fight a guerrilla war against the Boers as part of the Bushveldt Carbineers.
Along with two other Australian lieutenants, ‘Breaker’ is put on trial for shooting Boer prisoners. Though acting under orders, they are used as scapegoats by the General Staff, who hope to distance themselves from the irregular practices of this war. The trail does not progress smoothly, as the defence puts up a strong fight in the courtroom.
Along with Breaker Morant, a special short film featuring the Australian Light Horse at the foundation of Canberra will be shown. The evening will also include a short speech by the Tyalgum Diggers President, Peter Meadows.
Drinks and nibbles will be available.
